New Proposal Rocks Baseball World

In a stunning move, and with thirteen games left in the season, unconfirmed news comes that the Yellow Springs Nine front office has petitioned the league to begin using a new method of determining the standings. “We all know that the pitcher Win is a meaningless stat, and that things like ERA are better judges of a pitcher’s skill, FIP and WHIP even better still. So this proposal takes this concept further into the realm of the baseball team rather than the baseball player,” the alleged petition reads.

This newfangled method relies upon the runs that each team’s offense has actually scored vs. how many their pitching staff had given up. It then combines the two in an inventive way to project how many wins each team really should have had, and then ranks them in that order. The report supports itself in the following fashion. “This method is more likely to expose overall skill levels of all teams, and hence is more likely to determine the better team than something that is left to such an arbitrary stat as the Win. Since we all can agree than the goal of the regular season is to determine the best teams, this approach would represent a substantial improvement over the outdated model of ranking each division by the games they win.”

The report suggests an equation known to some of the more nerdy stat-heads as the Pythagoras Record, or Pythagorean Record. If it were used, the Heartland Division standings would look considerably different:

  • Yellow Springs 90-59 (Currently 88-61, second)
  • Louisville 85-65 (Currently 83-65, third)
  • Madison 81-67 (Currently 92-56, first)
  • Twin Cities 77-72 (Currently 79-70)
  • Omaha 72-77 (Currently 69-80)
  • Des Moines 64-84 (Currently 66-82)
  • Indy 64-84 (Currently 60-88)

A quick scan of this result, combined with its timing, does make it seem a bit self-serving. But the heart of the proposal does seem to be in the right place, so we think it’s an easy proposal to get behind, assuming it’s true.

The 9-Lives staff has obtained a copy of the document, and it appears to be genuine, having the signature of most of the front office staff. The logo that is affixed to the letterhead does appear to have ran a bit, however, which seems odd unless a team that’s reported to be online for a $30M PBPR (profit before playoff revenue) is under such cost-cutting edicts as using cheap inkjet printer cartridges.

"something that is left to such an arbitrary stat as the Win"

Sounds like something a criminal defense lawyer would say

I think we need to recognize that if you took all the team's records together it would come out to .500 so we're all champions
