Veteran Will Sit Out a Week, Martinez to Debut

Even with a Pennant on the line, the Yellow Springs Nine are taking no chances. Oft-injured veteran hurler Rick Ward tweaked an oblique after only two innings at Vancouver, and was immediately removed from the game. Afterwards, Mike Burns, the team’s trainer, said he would be fine, and suggested at least four days of rest. With the rosters now expanded, the team chose to call up reliever Alfredo Martinez, and sit Ward down for at least a week.

“I would rather be out there pitching,” Ward said, “but I understand.”

Ward has made only 11 starts this season after being acquired from Brooklyn in a mad-dash to the division title. He partially tore his labrum and lost much of the early part of the season, but was rounding into form, having posted a 4-1 record and dropped his ERA nearly 40 points in the past month (it stands at 3.98).

“We know we need a healthy Rick Ward in the post season,” said manager Bret Richards. “The decision is a no-brainer.”

(to which one fan was heard to say “well, at least Richards qualified to make that one.”)

To give the team a bit of an extra boost in the pen this week, the club has called up Alfredo Martinez, a reliever once acquired in the same deal that brought Jose Souza to the team. Martinez made a brief trip to the free agency pool, but the club retained his rights shortly thereafter. He’s been starting at AAA, though most assumed his role would be in the pen at the big league level. In 148 innings, Martinez went 8-5, and posted a 3.65 ERA. He throws a 98 MPH speed ball and mixes in a solid curve and an occasional change up that he can occasionally leave a little too high in the zone. The assignment represents Martinez's debut at the major league level.
