Ex-5th Rounder to Fill Back-up Role, Defensive Specialist

With the AAA schedule winding down, the YS9 organization released news that they have recalled 23-year-old catcher Nate Wood. The native of North Carolina was with the team as a 21-year-old rookie in 2030, when he hit .245/.280/.431 in 92 games, but was sent down for an obvious need of seasoning.

“We rushed Nate earlier,” the team’s assistant GM admitted earlier, “but he’s doing really well in Flagstaff (.285/.356/.463, 6 HR, 35 RBI). The pitchers there all talk about how much they love to throw to the guy.”

Wood’s future with the club has grown uncertain due to the explosion of Aaron Stone appearing out of nowhere, but Wood is highly regarded, and team insiders suggest he’ll give veteran Jose Pena a run for his backup role next season; though to be fair, Pena’s role isn’t back-up, so much as left-handed guy in a partial platoon. The team plans to use Wood as a defensive replacement for the lumbering Stone, and will probably have him start a few games as the playoffs near in order to save the team from injury.

“The future is almost really here for Nate,” one baseball guy said.

Wood himself was happy to hear the news of his call-up, but was a bit irascible. “It’s about time,” he said over the phone as he was en route to the plane that will take him to Vancouver, where the team will play the Mounties tonight. “I mean, I understand I’m young, and all, but I’m ready to pay.” At one point earlier in the year, however, the Nine were rumored to be shopping Wood around, and getting no takers.

“No one wanted our Wood,” an anonymous member of the scouting staff said. “No one except Louisville, anyway. But they quickly shut it down when we said it was Nate Wood rather than just our Wood.” He paused. “It was really strange. But, then, all of our conversations with Louisville are strange.”
