Roster Expansion Fits Team Needs

As the calendar turns to September, BBA rosters jump to allow up to 40 players. The Nine will not have the same financial constraints that they had last season, but still look to utilize only three additional players at present. “We’ve debated bring a few other guys up,” said assistant GM Howard Dunlap at the team’s recent weekly press conference, “and we might add more as the month progresses. But right now we’re chasing a pennant, so we’re going to focus our efforts in that direction.”

He went on to discuss three players, and what their roles would be. Here’s a brief run-down of each.

RP – Jerry Ivory (8/7/8): After a solid spring, the 23-year-old Ivory started the season with the Nine and with great expectations. He struggled with nerves at times, nerves that manifested themselves as long-balls. Then in early June he suffered the Mother of All High Ankle Sprains, and has been on the shelf since. This talented Australian and second round pick in 2029 will join an already fairly capable bullpen in hopes that he can ease injury fears and make people comfortable with the idea of using him on the playoff roster, and into next season.

1B – Jose Gonzalez (6/6/7/3/6): Not to be confused with the other Jose Gonzalez on the team (who also plays first base), this Gonzalez is a switch hitting thumper who finished the minor league season with 31 homers in 493 AB while in Flagstaff. He’s been a steady bat at that level for the past couple season, and at 25 he’s ready to contribute. Expect to see him hit as DH vs. LHP, a position that Steven Gibbons has been holding down with a modicum of success, but at a price tag that will be five times what Gonzalez could pull next year.

OF – Angel Hernandez (5/6/4/5/7): This 26-year-old is no stranger to Yellow Springs fans, having been with the team on and off again since 2028. Hernandez is one of those meat-and-potato kind of players the Nine has lived off of for some time—not really someone you look at with any great expectation, but a guy who just seems to be generally helpful in a lot of little ways. He’s likely to see only limited action, but you can expect to see him on the field as a defensive replacement at the corner outfield, and as a pinch runner in the late innings.
