Orders “Double Martinez On the Rocks"

August 25, 2031--The mysterious season of Cesar Martinezcontinued its merry way along the rollercoaster tracks yesterday, this time crashing into the dark abyss at the end of the line. With a rested bullpen, the Nine entered the eleventh inning with Valencia tied 1-1. The bats had been cold, but Eduardo Lopez had been his brilliant self, going 7 and a third while lowering his ERA to 3.35 by giving up only the 1 run.

In comes Cesar Martinez, who has had a yo-yo kind of year, brilliantly up one outing, total disaster the next. His evening would prove the rule, starting with the solo homer he gave to Ricardo Guzman to set the team down a run. It would have been worse, but the runner he put on first with a hit batsman got caught stealing. It looked dire for Martinez, but the Nine offense generated a run in their half of the 11th on a single, walk, and another single.

Richards then did the unfathomable and stayed with Martinez.

Miraculously, the Stars proved inept enough in both the 12th and 13th innings that the 35 year old pitcher emerged unscathed. The Nine were unable to scratch a run themselves, so on came the 14h. Martinez had thrown 44 pitches in 3 innings, easily his longest outing of the season. Surely we would see another pitcher.

No.

Richards cranked up the dumb decision generator and left Garza and Thomas and a scad of others sitting on the pine, then watched as Martinez gave up back-to-back doubles before pulling him. Both would score, and the Nine would lose 4-3 with the tying run being thrown out at the plate after the third base coach grabbed Richard’s dumb decision generator and sent McNeill home from second on an infield hit.

At this point we’re pretty much over trying to understand Richard’s infatuation with Cesar Martinez, whose 4.13 ERA looks only slightly better than his 2-11 record. We just are. I mean, the guy is responsible for more than 20% of the team’s losses, and the manager keeps calling his number. How the hell is this team in first place?

This is in no way personal but I really, really, really want Martinez and Richards to get you knocked out of the playoffs. You had the entire year to get rid of both and fix the problem and you did nothing.

That would make a great storyline. :)
