GM Discusses the Sluggers, the Deadline, and the Future

As part of the team’s fan outreach program, Yellow Springs GM Ron Collins was recently interviewed on WZY9, a small local radio station, wherein he discussed the team’s situation, its relationship with Louisville, and several other topics.

“To be honest with you,” Collins said. “We’re pretty much over Louisville. They weren’t really a big deal to anyone in the office before the realignment, but once we got together it was important to understand who they were—I mean, beyond the fan bias. They’re a good team, and their front office is a great group to visit with. Genius can tell a tall tale with the best of them, you know? But now we’ve pretty much built the team we want. We’re charting our own territory.”

“You’re saying that at one point you were trying to catch up, but now you’re ahead?”

“More like we’re to the point where we think we’re doing our thing. For several seasons we were adjusting to other teams. Now we think they can adjust to us.”

It was a comment made to a small market audience, but it carries big market consequences. The Nine have appeared to come out of the tunnel now as a fully-formed team, capable of putting something that resembles a quality player on the field at all times—though the fact of the matter is that we can’t figure out how it works at times (on paper, that outfield just can’t be trusted, yet, it’s making it work…can anyone say Steven Gibbons? We knew you could.)

One of the consequences is the trade market, where the club made a huge splash during the league’s #FakeDeadline fiasco, adding three high-profile pitchers.

”We would love to do more,” Collins said. “Like every team out there, we’ve got holes where we could get better.”

The issue he’s run into is finances and valuation.

”We’re tight on future cash now, and when you start looking at a rental it’s hard to pay the price some of the other teams want for a guy who can really jump in and help right away. And that even assumes you can find a guy like that on a contract that works. It’s not a target-rich environment, and the fact is that the team is put together the way we want it. All the bricks are in the right places. They all have their purposes and they’re all doing things that help us win. We’re not going to do something that messes with that too much. We keep trying, though. I would love to find a thumper to put into the lineup or another stopper to put into the bullpen if the prices work out.”

So, yeah. The Nine are still buying as the #RealDeadline approaches, but are apparently shopping with an air of caution. Sounds good to us fans.
