Young Hitter Takes Disgruntlement Out On Horsehide

Victor Guerra can be forgiven if he doesn’t find much humor in how his nickname had been used over the past year. “Barbarian” hadn’t been particularly barbaric with the baseball bat in his hand, unless, that is, you happened to be an empty Gatorade cooler in the team’s clubhouse and you just happened to be in the wrong place when Guerra returned from striking out. In that case, he was considerably barbaric, leaving a wake of plastic and insulation that would make a chemist smile in glee.

On June 30, his batting average stood at .198, his OPS at .599. He had hit a very unbarbaric 7 homers. These were numbers that had some people suggesting Guerra had to be shipped back to the team’s AAA group in Flagstaff to work on his swing. It has others ready to punch him, and others serenading him. Radio show callers were taunting him, calling him “Babybaric.” The fans wanted blood.

Not Nine hitting coach William Campbell, though.

Campbell wanted consistency. Calm, reasoned consistency. And he wanted the Gatorade coolers to survive. “The guys wanted to drink up in the middle of the game,” Campbell explained with a grin. In the meantime he kept sitting next to Guerra, whispering in his ear and showing him video.

Whatever he said, well…we think he needs to keep saying it.

Since July 1, Guerra’s hitting .308/.417/.635, with 10 home runs and 35 RBI. This is during streak of high-pressure games wherein the team needed him the most. He hit a game-deciding homer in Des Moines and added a needed double against to Kernels in the latest home sweep of that same team.

“His play had him down, you know?” Campbell said. “Still does, really. Victor’s got his pride, you know? He thought he was flying pretty high last year, and it all tumbled down. He just needed to know it happens, right? The sophomore jinx is a real thing sometimes, but guys like Victor can overcome these things. He’s going to be fine as things come along.”

One of the things that’s “coming along” is Guerra’s starting position. For the past month Salvador Gonzalez has been considered the starter at a corner. Last week, that changed. Yes, they’ll be splitting time a bit, but Guerra is clearly the owner of right field. It’s a step in the right direction. And, if this kind of production continues, putting the cart a little before the horse, one suspects that Guerra’s next steps in the right direction might be taken in the post season.

It's taken him a good long while to get here. You think he reaches his potentials?

His power rating made a huge jump this year. From 5 > 8. He's only 25, so his power rating "should" still grow. You never know, of course. With some luck, though, he'll have a series of semi-cheap 2-5-3 WAR kind of years, which would be huge values for us at this point of our cycle.
