Team Takes 5 of 7 from Rivals, Fans Go Crazy

Home, sweet home, eh?

Or, talk about carrying a little momentum a long way.

Fresh off a huge road trip that saw the Nine defy odds and go 13-7, and a recent split with Des Moines, the team celebrated returning home by ripping three wins from the hands of the Kernels, outscoring the Iowans 15-5 over those three games. For the week, the Nine took 5 games of the 7 the two teams played. Their bats scored when they needed to score and their bullpen held them when they needed to hold them, which wasn’t often, because, bottom line, the Nine rotation is almost impossible to hit right now.

Crash LaLoosh threw the most dominant game of the set, shutting out the Kernels for his 14th victory. Ex-Nebraska winner Dogface Chavez was perhaps even better, though the Kernels made him pay the ultimate price in belting two solo homers for their only two runs. He won his 12th game on the season. Then Randall Thomas (6 - 2, 3.62 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 56 K) held things together with lots of help from the pen, Jose Marroquin picking up his 5th win in the series, David Cantu (3 - 4, 3.07 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 41 K) his 10th save.

Is this the best staff in baseball?

Who knows? Or, better, who cares? Just let them pitch, we say. Let Rick Ward (8 - 12, 4.64 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 128 K) keep his act together, an Alberto Sanchez (6 - 6, 3.81 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 90 K) continue to recover. Let Crash be Crash. Let Dogface remind us of the guy who was throwing so divinely just two seasons back. And let Eduardo Lopez (13 - 9, 3.44 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 143 K) return to the hill and finish what may be a magic season.

And the pen? Yes, the bullpen. Is it the best? Could be? Who cares? Cantu is rejuvenated in Yellow Springs. Sandoval is being magnificent. Martinez is finding his groove out of the spotlight. And Randall Thomas (6 - 2, 3.62 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 56 K)? Is he a starter? A reliever? Who cares? Just let the dude pitch, I say. Just let all the dudes pitch.

But, yes, the bats were there, too. For the three game series, the club pounded out 21 total hits in the two bookend games, and only 5 in the middle tilt. Yet they found a way to turn those five into three runs—just enough to win, and no more. Unsung Juan Arevalo (.180/.266/.414, 8 HR, 21 RBI) gave one of those five hits in the form of a towering blast that cleared the fences.

No, offensively this team is no murderer’s row. But it’s like a water torture device that applies a constant pressure until something breaks. Then watch out.

In the end, the team sits now at 75-51, three and a half games up on rival Louisville. Eight games up on Madison. An almost insurmountable 11 on Des Moines. 12 on Omaha. Anything can happen. This is baseball, after all.

But leaving Chavez Memorial Stadium after the Nine’s three game sweep of Des Moines you could almost feel something special floating in the air. There, mixed in with the mix of popcorn and Nine-Inch Dogs “Give us your big Nine Inch!”, and the smell of beer and jalapeno nachos was the distinct aroma of victory, the essence of a champion. The Yellow Springs nine are on top of the division with a team that’s suddenly got that swagger thing going on. As painful as the gods of baseball can be, for just this moment, any true Yellow Springs fan should take the moment to rejoice, take the moment to smile, and maybe hug your kid or your wife or husband, and take a moment to feel what it’s like to be on the top of the hill.

After all, it’s been a helluva climb, eh?

That was, admittedly, a pretty amazing series for the Nine.

I'm astounded we handled you guys like that. Would not have predicted it.
