Team Announces Spot Starter to Spot Start

With news that Eduardo Lopez is a little sore, veteran swing man Randall Thomas is expected to step into the rotation sometime this week as the Nine prepared to face Des Moines in six critical Heartland games. Yellow Springs lost the first game of a four-game stint in Iowa, so it’s looking to even the score here before the two teams travel back to Ohio for three more.

“It will be good to get back home for a while,” said Lawrence Columbus “Crash” LaLoosh. The three games in Des Moines will be the end of a grueling stint that saw the club play 20 of 22 games on the road, including a stressful trans-pacific home and home with Hawaii.

There was no word as to which game the 29-year-old Thomas would be tagged to start. The right-hander sports a 3.69 ERA this season in 14 games, 9 of them starts. His record stands at 5-2, and he’s been credited with one save. He’s been a Mr. Fixit kind of a pitcher since he first appears in the league, able to pitch in a variety of roles.

“We have a lot of faith in Randall,” said clubhouse leader J.J. McQuade. “The guy knows how to get people out.”

Lopez is sitting on what has been claimed to be a “strained” shoulder, though that term is both quite general and worrisome. What, after all, does “strained” mean? What is the Nine medical staff not sharing with us? Theoretically, the 34-year-old ace is not being skipped so much as “moved back,” but again, no one is sure what that means or even if there’s any real difference in those two ideas.

Fans want to know these kinds of things, so there continues to be some angsty shade being thrown at the club on social media these days.

A good outing from Thomas would probably go a long way to resolving some of those concerns, as would, of course, the subsequent return of Lopez.
