Wormtail Extended

With the Hot Stove season just around the corner, the Robins got a head start on their arbitration decisions today by extending designated hitter Antonio Valentin. Wormtail agrees to $8.58 million over three years in a deal that will cover the rest of his arbitration years plus one free agency season. Antonio was imported from Long Beach on May 27th in a somewhat controversial deal for 23 year old "nonspect" Jorge Cordola (9/7/2 Ratings). To Cardola's credit, he had a heck of a season in double A for the Surfers. Even a modest improvement in his control will silence any critics. For Brooklyn, they saw Valentin as a hitter similar to Holden Blackwell (9/5/3/3/10 Ratings) who could take over at DH if the Robins decided to part ways with Enrique Salazar (7/5/9/5/7 Ratings).

Valentin is currently hitting .336/.387/.442 in 90 games since the trade with 11 triples and 56 stolen bases. Valentin, along with Blackwell, Tony Gustafsen (7/6/1/4/8 Ratings), Julian Rodriguez (7/6/1/6/9 Ratings), Luis Soto and several others are among the group called the "Run, Run, Robins". A team wide philosophy of running till you get thrown out.

Extending Wormtail was said to be a high priority. While is overall skillset as a player has many holes, his ability to hit is unquestioned. Red Robin Park at Ebbets Field is a dreamland for singles hitters who consistently put the bat on the ball. Brooklyn expects his short sample of work to be the standard for him. 2 more seasons near the top of the league in hitting will certainly drive his demands up. The Robins got burned not locking up Luis Soto to a reasonable deal when they had a chance and weren't about to make the same mistake again.

This extension all but closes the door on Enrique Salazar (7/5/9/5/7 Ratings) returning to Brooklyn. Salazar, like Valentin, is a left handed hitter who really shouldn't be in the field. Salazar may be passable in the outfield for some teams. Heck, Brooklyn won a Landis with his poor defense in right. But with the Robins new found commitment to defense, there isn't enough room in the lineup for both.

That's a pretty productive bat to replace. Still, you can't play five DH's.

I'm definitely going to need to add a little power somewhere. A left handed slugging 1B(Moreno or otherwise) will be on my shopping list for sure.

Yeah, that's a lot to replace when he hasn't been all that bad in actuality. The problem is, at 28 next year, when will that 4 turn into a 3?

With Wormtail, I love extending my arb eligible players.
