Crunchy Returns

The Brooklyn Robins made some big news this week by trading for world class slugger Fernando Moreno. Lost in the headline catching trade was another minor move that the Robins made. Brooklyn claimed future Hall of Fame closer and former Robin Skip 'Crunchy' Glendenning on waivers from the Phoenix Talons. Now when you think about a contending team adding a hall of fame player, that's usually something special. But in this case, Crunchy is well past his prime. The 37 year old still has decent control and good movement on his pitches. He has just lost all of the velocity that made him famous.

Skip still loves the game though. He has continued playing well past his prime by tutoring young kids and putting butts in the seats. That is exactly what the Robins expect from Crunchy with this waiver claim. With over two thirds of the season in the books, the Robins will end up paying Skip somewhere around $500k. Not a bad price for someone that can grow the budget with merch and ticket sales. As far as on field production goes? It's unclear if Crunchy will even appear in a game. The 40 man roster expansion will occur a mere days after Skip must be activated. The Robins plan to use him as a bullpen coach and give manager Bruce Frank specific instructions not to let Crunchy play. Now, if the season is decided(either way), all bets are off. With the way the Robns use(or abuse) pitchers, we may even see Glendenning make his first ever start after 1,073 career relief appearances.

As a long reliever, you could do a lot worse than the sub-4.00 FIP Skip has put up the past few seasons without his velo.
