Amid the chaos of the final two weeks of the pennant run, it’s easy to lose track of the grunt work that goes on under the surface of the roiling BBA seas. In this case, we’re talking about the hard work of scouting that goes on in every organization, and specifically the hard work of scouting that goes into player acquisition overseas.

In other words, while waiting for the sim, I happened to see a notice of IFAs having been found, and I got curious. So blame it on Recte.

Sure, the sexy part happens early in the calendar year when the fat-cats line up at the trough to suck from the sugary teat of teams loaded up on post-season cash. But it goes deeper than that. We’re talking about the dedicated scouts that weather the jungles in South America and the cracked cobblestones in Bulgari. We’re talking about baseball guys who live out of their VW vans and eat spam on a stick to make that elusive find.

In thinking about this, we started to wonder who the big winners in this rut-gut world of grind-it-out player acquisition was. Which teams scored best in finding International Minor League Free Agents? Which teams did best in filling their complexes?

Here are our results…

Taking all International FA into account, with 19 total IFA added this season, California leads the pack by a large distance. This isn’t too surprising seeing that they bought most of the market in January. Here’s the overall breakout:

Team IFA
California Crusaders 19
Yellow Springs Nine 14
Long Beach Surfers 14
Calgary Pioneers 13
Havana Sugar Kings 11
Atlantic City Gamblers 10
Seattle Storm 10
Charm City Jimmies 10
Carolina Kraken 9
San Antonio Outlaws 9
Halifax Hawks 9
Hawaii Tropics 9
New Orleans Crawdads 8
Brooklyn Robins 8
Jacksonville Hurricanes 8
Madison Wolves 8
Montreal Blazers 8
Valencia Stars 7
Edmonton Jackrabbits 7
Twin Cities River Monsters 5
Des Moines Kernels 5
Louisville Sluggers 5
Las Vegas Hustlers 5
Vancouver Mounties 4
Huntsville Phantoms 4
Omaha Barnstormers 4
Phoenix Talons 4
Indy Grasshoppers 3
Grand Total 230

But let’s take a look at the teams who just went out and found players. Removing the bonus babies, here’s what we got:

Team IFA
Yellow Springs Nine 14
Long Beach Surfers 12
Calgary Pioneers 12
Havana Sugar Kings 11
Seattle Storm 10
Hawaii Tropics 9
San Antonio Outlaws 9
Halifax Hawks 9
Charm City Jimmies 9
Brooklyn Robins 8
Montreal Blazers 8
California Crusaders 8
Madison Wolves 8
Atlantic City Gamblers 8
Jacksonville Hurricanes 8
Valencia Stars 7
Edmonton Jackrabbits 7
Carolina Kraken 6
New Orleans Crawdads 6
Las Vegas Hustlers 5
Twin Cities River Monsters 5
Des Moines Kernels 5
Huntsville Phantoms 4
Omaha Barnstormers 4
Phoenix Talons 4
Louisville Sluggers 3
Indy Grasshoppers 3
Vancouver Mounties 2
Grand Total 204

In this view, Yellow Springs, who basically whiffed out on all their buying efforts, brought in a bunch of “who are these guys?” kind of IFA, leading the league with 14. Vancouver had only two. I have no idea what this means, nor do I know if the figures are consistent (would YS9 do better than everyone every year?)

It would be interesting some time, I suppose, to go through and analyze the quality of these guys, which we assume is relatively low…except, of course, for the ones who become bigtime players.

If I remember, I'll do another run about this time next year and see if they carry over. Until then, I wouldn't make too many overall guesses. But, yes, at least this year, your scouts did more drinking than signing. :)

My best position player is a scouting find. 2B/SS Claudio Defazio (who better get some damn all star consideration next year). Ten years in and the only the second player my system has ever developed from garbage to star. (The other is Ippolito Basaglia)

We got both SS Angel De Castillo and CF Carlos Garcia out of the IC.

Jimmy Greenwood and Ron Mosley are the best to come out of LBC's IC

I thought Greenwood was a former pick that you traded for?

Is it possibly related to how many players were in the International Complex to begin with? (i.e. if you have close to the max of 50, you get fewer)
